Look for my review on it later this week....fantastic accessory for your K790i and its "Sreaming Stereo" bluetooth profile!!














The K790i uses the same Sony Micro Duo as the new M600 and W300 Flip phone I have...



and its CCD sensor does cause it to have a "hump" but it is still not real thick...




The back of the K790i has a glossy plastic lens cover (makes no sense to me as it will scratch easily) to protect the Sony CyberShot lens. Using a 3.2 MegaPixel CCD sensor the K790i is a true Digital Camera with a phone. Additionally to this quality sensor and optics combination, the K790i uses a "REAL CAMERA FLASH" and a infrared light for the auto-focus duties in low light.... see the shiny plastic below the lens cover..



Pulling down the lens cover you see the Sony lens and the camera application is started on the K790i...









As you can see the K790i and the M600 are using the same design scheme, color and material construction. Business? Manly? ,,,, how ever you wish to describe it... I prefer "Professional"!!

Sony Ericsson K790i 3.2 MegaPixel CyBerShot Camera Function & Menus.



Well, since the K790i is famous for its HUGE 3.2 MegaPixel image sensor, I thought this would be the appropriate place to start my examination and review of this device. First of all I'm told that the camera in the K790i is using a CCD sensor and the large hump is either to make room for such a sensor which are larger as the resolution goes up compared to CMOS or possibly its for the optic and automatic focus and image stabalization features? My source says CCD so I'm sticking with that for now. It offers up to 4X Digital Zoom as well using the volume keys.

First I'll start with the two (2) new hardware buttons at the top of the K790i. These are mapped for 4 different functions when pressed.



First, without the camera application being opened pressing the top left button or bottom as you hold the K790i as a camera produces the first photo in the file ....



Pressing the top right or top button as you hold the K790i as a camera produces a thumb nail view of your photos...



While using the K790i with the camera application running....

With the camera application being opened pressing the top left button or bottom as you hold the K790i as a camera produces the "Shoot Mode" and "Best Shot" feature comes up first...repeated presses move through the "Shoot Mode" menu ....


Pressing the top right or top button as you hold the K790i as a camera produces the "Scenes" and "Twilight Portrait" feature.... repeated presses move through the "Scenes" menu...

Another Feature which I have never seen on any camera phone is a very high quality Auto Focus and Image Stabalization hardware. As you can see in this series of photos a "infrared or laser" system is used to automatically focus on the subject of your photograph... Considering my Nikon 8800 uses a "Image Stabalization" and focusing system similar to this I find this feature highly impressive in a consumer camera phone!!



During the auto focusing process you see the "red light" being shot from the flash.....to refelct back to the sensor at the bottom of the lens.....



At the far right of the flash you can see the infrared/laser diode .....



and during operation..



Once the K790i is "focused" the red light goes out and a solid green dot in the corner and green cross hair appear on the screen/view finder...

The K790i will automatically resize the photo for email and MMS use even if it is a 3 megapixel resolution photo....

Picture Size.... yep.... 3 MegaPixels is it!! Just remember to select the "Fine" quality in the other menu....





Auto Focus Menus...






Flash Menu.... "Red Eye" reduction is a very nice feature for a camera phone as well as the others mentioned.. Plus, remember??? This is a REAL CAMERA FLASH!! Not a LED Light...





Timer.....



Effects... such as Solarize, etc..



White Balance



Metering Mode..





Picture Quality.. remember this menu when you select Image Size so you don't get a grainy photo .. larger file but worth it in my opinion..





Shutter Sound.... no selection for silent..but turning off the ringer on the K790i I'm using accomplishes a silent shutter for covert photos!!



Time & Date..



Reset File Number...



Save to phone memory or Micro Duo..





High Quality Video Menus...



Shoot Mode.. for Video or MMS....





Auto Focus...



Image Stabalization Feature!! VERY NICE!!

The other menus for file number, Save To, date time, etc... are there but are repetitive...

Viewing a Photo allows you to ZOOM up to 32X on your K790i...











Overall this is the Baddest Camera Phone available in North America. It has dedicated Digital Camera Featues in a phone with EDGE data abilities. If you travel, have children, pets, or need a quality camera/video combination for your job... insurance adjuster, real estate, lawyer, etc.... this high quality camera with flash, image stabalization and auto focus system is the best choice available currently in North America. Japan may have some high tech camera phones..but right now this is "DA'SHIT!!"..... Well, there goes the W810i being my best little camera phone selection!!


BlueTooth Operation!!


The nicest suprise for me so far is the fact that the K790i carries the "A2DP" "Stereo Streaming" Bluetooth profile on its bluetooth stack just like the New P990i and M600. Although the K790 doesn't carry the "WalkMan" Media Player Software, it does use a similar software as the P990i with a feature called "Stereo Widening"....







Something else I haven't seen before are the "Video Ringtones"... pretty cool to have the train coming at you as the ringtone plays...





So stay tuned as I take this baby all the way to Jamaica and the Hedonism II resort in Negril!! It ain't P.I.M.P.'n unless Your Sin'n!!

Remember, this review is ongoing with my primarily waiting to return from Jamaica during Memorial Day Weekend for the real "Review"..hehe.. the K790i camera performance with photos from my trip!! That is something I don't think anyone will want to miss.

This phone is focused on the shutter bug who travels, has a family with small children and wants a quality digi-cam in their pocket at all times. I will continue to post more information about it and its features and performance up to the departure date for my trip. Just seems I got all the cool summer phones at about the same time..the M600, K790, Star Trek, Canary, and a very cool Stereo Bluetooth Headset that I love the HBH-970 ...

So, check back to learn more about the K790, it will get a full review as this is a very important and powerful new phone...the "Best in Class" from Sony Ericsson.

Nice review and pics there.. Any info on that video resolution in the k790i? is it the same as the w900i or like the old k750i?

So when is the k790a going to be released? I need 850.....COME ON SE!!!! This phone looks awesome.....just wish i could actually get my hands on it.

It should be in the W950i rez when released though... Suprisingly the Motorola Canary and Capri have outstanding video performance comparitively....at 352 X 288.

Release is immenient... I was told July..... for both it and P990i....looks like mid August for P990i..... so maybe same for K790?

p990 is out already. as for k790 dunno, but my hookup has the k800i and the p990 for sale. ive seen both of them myself in my bare hands.

i think the only difference is k800i is 3g and the 790 is not, but she had both of them the same week i took the pics for the x820 i posted up.

edit: forgot to mention, she also had the k610 as well in which i was playing with too.

Well it's weird cause the k790i is on ebay and everything, but the k790a (with 850) which sony themselves claim is released (based on emails people got when they questioned the phones availability) is nowhere to be found. I'm just hoping it's not going to be one of those phones that only gets released through a carrier. That would be worthless.......and probably make it take forever to actually be buyable.

MY K790 was Quadband. EDGE, no UMTS....
